Dual Composter

Take advantage of a more efficient method of composting with the Lifetime Dual Composter. The dual tumbler design means you don't have to wait for your first batch of compost to finish cooking before you start on another one. This can eliminate weeks of waiting! Each 50 gallon tumbler is constructed of black double-walled polyethylene plastic to absorb heat and an internal aeration bar to create the necessary airflow needed to break down the compost ingredients. Four small vents are designed into each corner of the tumbler to provide additional airflow. The non-cylindrical design of the tumblers allows for more effective mixing of contents when rotated. The tumblers are set side-by-side on a sturdy steel base and can be easily turned on its axis for compost rotation. Use the red processing indicator clip to attach to the handle of the tumbler so you can keep track of which batch is cooking and which batch you can add fresh ingredients to. With the enclosed tumbler design you can speed up compost processing time and avoid the smelly, unsightly mess of an open compost heap. Save money on expensive fertilizers by creating your own rich, fresh compost for your vegetable and flower gardens. This product does not contain BPA.

For more information on composting including what kinds of materials should and should not be composted, read our Garden Composting article as well as our How To Compost instructions.

Assembly & Manuals

Dual Compost Tumbler is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Liked it while it lasted I have had my composter for 4+ years. It did take a long time to assemble. My pins to hold the barrels in place broke pretty shortly after we purchased it. All of the metal inside of the barrels began rusting shortly after we started using it. When it rains water gets inside of the lid, so when you tumble it you can hear water sloshing around inside of it. The closing mechanism has always been stiff but has been functional and served it's purpose, until today. One of the bars of the latch snapped off when I tried to turn it. It has composted a lot of soil over the last few years, but I don't think I will purchase this model again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Service Bought the Dual Compost Tumbler a long time ago, maybe 5 years. Love it. Taken pretty good care of it by cleaning the rusty locking mechanism every 6 mos or so. Was a little disappointed they weren't more rust resistant. Anyway, finally rusted shut and since they work great for us otherwise, I called to see if I could buy replacement parts. Talked to Luke in customer service who quickly volunteered to ship them for free. He did this without me complaining, threatening, whining or anything. The company stands by its products, hires terrific associates who deliver amazing customer service. Many thanks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am a Master Compost Instructor ...for Clallam County in Washington State. When it comes to composters, whether store bought or hand built, I've seen them all. But of all of them, I tip my hat to this one. I was out buying the parts to build a new drum composter - a plastic 45gal barrel and some aluminum - but the moment I saw this one, I was sold! In fact, the money I spent wouldn't even pay for the parts of the one I was about to build. More importantly, this one has indestructible construction (extremely important when dealing with nematodes and other microbes breaking down organic matter into compost), a powder-coated base, and the multi-position drum locking system is a breeze to fill and empty! It's also the perfect size for the average residential home. Best of all, .....it's incredibly easy! For best results, mix 50% brown with 50% green, then tumble it for a minute or two. Within a day or two (depending on the ambient temperature), the mixture will begin to generate heat. Encouraged by this units double-wall construction, this is what you want, ....SO LEAVE IT ALONE! Once the temperature has subsided, spin the drum for a minute to remix the ingredients. Again, it will begin to generate heat. For best results, do this procedure 3 or 4 times, until it no longer generates heat. It is now ready to use.One last comment about compost. The goal of composting is not to make compost, but to create an environment that generates and encourages microbial habitat; these are the little guys that continue to break down organic matter into the building blocks that feed your plants long after you have spread the compost on your garden or lawn. Like you, nematodes need air and water to survive, so dry soil is dead soil.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worked great but rusted out We bought this compost Tumbler for my wife on her birthday four years ago. It has been great and so easy to turn, however, the rust has been building up on the hinges and inside latches and getting harder and harder to open. Recently, the back hinges on one of the barrels rusted out and broke off, rendering the unit unable to be used. The handles have been rusting and harder to use but with a spray have been able to open it. It is a shame only one tumbler works now since we can't latch the other lid. Disappointed it did not last longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks great, small footprint, easy assembly I'm a backyard gardener and understand the value in making your own compost. Rotating (or "tumbling") composters are one of the best ways to make fast, nutrient-rich compost. I've tried a lot and have been most impressed with those made by Lifetime Products! I own their two other models and have been happy with them, but when I saw this double-unit I decided to swap out my tried-and-true singles for this one double.Assembly was much easier and faster than the previous two models (which weren't that difficult to begin with). It took my 11-year-old daughter and I about two-hours to put both together.I love the one-handed operation which makes these much easier to open and close, and they spin very smoothly. The cantilevered design gives you easy access to put your wheelbarrow under them and dump your compost right into it. Talk about well-thought-out!And they look good, too!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good product, expected last long, but NOT Bought it 4+ years from Costco and I started composting since then and like it. The latches however was the problem after a year to show signs of rust, and I have to use lubricant to make it easy to open and close the door. Until two month ago it finally broke and the composter becomes useless. Called the customer service and I was glad to hear they are going to send me replacement hardware, backlogged to end of June, 2017. I can wait for a month or two. Now, it is a week after the end of June and I called again to see where is my replacement parts. Guess what? It is in backlog without a date now. Are you serious? I will check with the store I bought it from and see what are the options.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Good product. Overall, this is a good product, but it does have a couple of flaws. The basic design and construction is very good. The unit is sturdy and stable, and the bins rotate freely. I have had mine over a year now, and I agree, the catch mechanism does tend to rust and jam, and definitely should have been made rust proof. By definition, the environment for the catch is going to be damp and corrosive. I fixed (sort of) the issue by spraying the mechanism with WD40 when needed. So far that has kept the catches operating. The other issue is the locking pin. The one on the right just snapped!. This is the bin I use for kitchen scraps, so it got much more use than the other one. In the kitchen I collect organic waste such as peels and cores in a counter top container. When it fills, I empty it into the compost bin, and rotate the bin a few time to mix. I usually stop the bin by letting the locking pin re-engage as the drum rotates. Apparently this is too much for the pin to withstand.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Construction Ruins Excellent Design I really LOVED this composter...UNTIL the hinge mechanism holding the lid on to one of the containers rusted through and the lid fell off. Without a lid, the Dual Compost Tumbler does not tumble! We purchased the composter during the summer of 2013, so it was only two years old. The hinge mechanism appears to have rusted through. The composter was not exposed to water often, as Texas is drought-stricken. Nor was the lid stressed excessively, as it rested on a fence when it was opened. Now, the lid on the remaining container is almost impossible to open, I'm guessing due to rust. This is a product that has great features and that should be getting uniform five star reviews, but I cannot give it anything but a one-star because cheap parts were used in the most critical places.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to assemble and waiting for my first batch! This took me 3-4 hours to put together - I was at a slow pace on a hot summer day.  The instructions were easy to follow.  Per other reviews, I did assemble the base on site of its final home.  I can see how moving it would be difficult.  I have noticed some rust appearing on one end at the aeration bar so will need to contact Customer Service.  I'm a SWF who enjoys small scale gardening and do-it yourself project.  I thoroughly enjoyed assembling this product and recommend it!

Before having these tumblers my composting was on the ground in a pile. I'd had much success that way. Too often the contents in the tumblers are too wet and rotting. What do I need to do differently? Thanks

Asked by: Grady
Unfortunately we only manufacture the composters and are not familiar with the composting process. I would recommend contacting a local hardware store or a nursery in your area and they will be able to provide information about composting for you.
