How to Compost: Best Guide to Using a Compost Tumbler
How to Compost: Best Guide to Using a Compost Tumbler

There are a lot of materials in a household that go to waste simply because we can’t find a use for them. We run into leftovers at home that go into the trash, old newspapers we’ve already read, and even some dry leaves and plants from cleaning up the yard. While it’s always an option to throw these things out, many homeowners are looking for alternatives to get more use out of the waste they produce. Learning how to compost allows homeowners to convert the waste they produce into compost that brings more life to their lawn and garden.

Garbage Stinks. Compost Doesn’t.
Garbage Stinks. Compost Doesn’t.

I had the very unpleasant experience recently of dumping excess lawn clippings directly into my garbage can. The can set out in the sun for a few days before I brought it into the garage. A few days later, WHOA! The can smelled like a skunk had stepped in dog doo-doo, rolled around in raw sewage, and then died in there. I was reminded once again, that lawn clippings should not go directly into the garbage can! I have a composter and do a fair amount of composting. To which, I add lawn clippings when I have brown material to balance it out. The ratio is 1 part green: 20 parts brown.  I am often asked by people who don’t compost if the compost stinks. The answer is no. That sounds strange because of the waste product that goes into making good compost, but it’s true. If the proportions of green and b...

The Official Kick-Off of Summer
The Official Kick-Off of Summer

The Fourth of July holiday will shortly be upon us; the holiday that seems to be the official launch of summer, sunburns, and water fights. With all the fun comes parades, BBQs, family reunions—the things we look forward to all year long. Whatever the event, you’re going to need seating and Lifetime has what you need. One of my favorites is the Lifetime 6-Foot Picnic Table. This sturdy table has been on my patio for years. Although it’s foldable for storage, I rarely put it away during the winter and it still looks great. The kids use it for projects, birthday parties, and general mess making (as you know how kids are). But with a quick wipe-down or spray from the hose it looks good enough to use a...

New Video Instructions To Help Assemble Your Shed!

Wow! Who would have thought our little homemade ‘How to Build our Shed’ video would have gotten so much attention. This little video one of our employees and her husband posted of building their shed at home a few years ago has more than 111,400 views. Our customers have told us how much they appreciate having videos along with the instructions to help guide them through their shed assembly. I am happy to announce we’ve provided even more shed assembly help videos. We have been working hard on producing videos that are specific to the various shed models we produce. We have taken the more difficult parts of our instruction manuals, as rated by our customers, and turned them into step-by-step videos. Customers can view these on their smart phones while out back building their s

I Love My New Garden Caddy

Gone are the days of having to load up my wheelbarrow or other container with tools from the shed, only to arrive at the spot in my yard I am working on and not have what I need. You know how it is—you end up spending half of your time in the yard going back and forth to the shed to get what you forgot the first time. That is, providing you can find it in the shed. Because if you’re like me, you haven’t organized your tools very well, either. I used to go back and forth, getting the stuff I needed before I was able to get to work. And when I was working I would inevitably set down one tool somewhere to use another, and then forget where I put the first tool. On one occasion, not exaggerating here, I was working with a rake. Two different times after I had laid the rake down, I stepped on it and had it swing up to hit me in the face. Yep, happened twice during th

Keep Your Tools Organized With a Lifetime Shed

At dinner with some friends this weekend we got talking about my job at Lifetime. One of my friends said, “Lifetime makes a lot of cool stuff.” There is a reason I have started my seventh year here at the company… because I agree.  We do make a lot of cool stuff. Working in the Lawn & Garden category these past six years, I have seen a lot of new products. But the core of the category has always been our sheds. In fact, it was an idea to create a shed that launched the category, and thus, my job! One of the neatest innovations in our family of sheds, in my opinion, has been our 10x8 and 15x8 line. These sheds have proven to be very popular. One of the great things about them is the way they allow you to organize your stuff. With the entry on the long side, you can compartmentalize between right and left halves of the shed. This means that when you need

Relax This Summer!

So the first few weeks of Spring are fun to work in the yard…then, reality hits, and I remember how yard work can be a lot of hard work! One of my favorite products we sell is our Adirondack chair. This chair is perfect for chillin’ after pulling weeds and planting flowers. Made from Polystyrene – a big word for a type of plastic that is made to look and feel like wood – this chair is great looking! It is low to the ground and has a slight recline so it’s nice and comfortable. The wood-like material is stain resistant, and holds up well in the sun. It looks like wooden furniture, but you won’t have to stain it every year. You can find our Adirondack chairs at your local Costco. A word of caution…when you tell your spouse you’ll be out weeding, don’t let her find you sleeping in your Adirondack chair&h
