Lifejacket1.jpgHere in the water sports department we often get asked, “Do I need to wear a life jacket when I kayak... even in flat water?”  It is a good question, and it has a really important answer - YES.

Almost all of the US states require you to have a life jacket with you when on the water, no matter the water conditions.  The details will, of course, vary state to state. The key is you should always have a life jacket when heading out for a paddle whether in your kayak or on your paddleboard.  More importantly, you should always be wearing your life jacket when you are paddling.

It is easy to brush the PFD (personal flotation device - aka lifejacket) off as a non-essential but it is just as important as your paddle and kayak.  You never know what could happen out there and it is always best to be prepared.   Even good swimmers should wear their PFD every time they paddle; never underestimate the power of water!

PFDs are ugly and uncomfortable, right? Who would want to wear them? This is a huge misconception. For a few extra dollars, you can get a PFD that is specifically designed for the recreational paddler.  These are made to fit comfortably with the recreational kayak design and the paddle strokes of a kayaker and they are generally stylish.  You won’t even know you are wearing it!

Lifejacket2.jpgBe sure to check with your state for the specific laws surrounding the use of life jackets.  And, be sure to have a jacket for all the paddlers who are going out on the water.  If you need a place to get a recreational paddling jacket, visit our friends at Sports Authority or Amazon.com.
