Some of you have asked if the plastic panels on the Lifetime Raised Garden Bed contain BPA (Bishphenol_A). Good question! BPA is a plasticizer that is used in the manufacturing of PVC (Polyvinyl chloride, recycling type 3 & 7) and other polycarbonate plastics to make them flexible. It is used mostly in flexible PVC piping, toys, plastic bottles, and the lining of some canned goods. In 2008, BPA became controversial as research indicated that it may be dangerous to our health—especially to babies. The US Food and Drug Administration has now taken steps to reduce human exposure to BPA in our food supply and food containers.

The good news is that Lifetime's plastic garden bed panels and the frost cover DO NOT contain BPA. They are a “Green Product”. We use high-density polyethylene plastic (HDPE, recycling code type 2), and non toxic, non heavy metal pigments and ultraviolet light stabilizers in these panels. HDPE plastic is the safest and most environmentally friendly plastic available today. There is no danger of toxic leeching from the plastic into the ground water.

Furthermore, when you’ve finally worn out those HDPE garden bed panels, they can be safely recycled without releasing toxins during the process. The plastic we use contains a significant portion of clean post consumer content derived from washed and cleaned containers made of FDA grade HDPE (such as milk and detergent bottles). The processing temperatures commonly exceed 300 degrees Fahrenheit and easily eliminate the risk of bacteria or virus spread..
