2025 is the 20th anniversary of Lifetime Outdoor Storage Sheds, so we’re celebrating 20 years of innovation, commitment to quality, and reliable lawn and garden improvement. This summer, look for special 20th anniversary deals and offers on Lifetime sheds while we revisit some inspiring milestones from the last 20 years.
The foundations of the Lifetime Sheds category were formed in 2003—at a product show, Lifetime engineers noticed that office dividers were a hot item. Taking advantage of our sophisticated manufacturing facilities, they engineered a unique and innovative new office divider wall. It utilized a double tack-off design, the first of its kind, to strengthen and support the integrity of the blow-molded wall. Tack-offs are reinforcing impressions in the blow-molded surface that harden and strengthen the structure as a whole—they can be seen on the underside of Lifetime tables. Features on both sides of the office divider hid the tack-offs, allowing them to strengthen the panel without interrupting the design. This was a brand-new technology that no one had tried before.
Unfortunately, not all of the divider inventory was sold, and much of it was stored in the Lifetime warehouse. Researchers then found a need in the lawn and garden storage market—no company was manufacturing a traditionally-styled blow-molded shed, only metal, which is less durable than resin, and wood, which requires much more maintenance. Lifetime’s engineers compiled prefabbed sheds from multiple different manufacturers and brought them all together, testing them and using focus groups to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each one.
The engineers decided to try using the old office dividers to put together a prototype for an outdoor storage shed, with the dividers as walls and tables as roof panels. The design was successful, and soon a custom shed model was engineered with its own floor and roof panels, as well as steel-reinforced wall panels modeled after the office dividers. In 2005, the first Lifetime Shed, the Lifetime 8-ft x 12.5-ft Outdoor Storage Shed, was released to the public.
The 8-foot sheds of today use a very similar platform to the original, but in the 20 years since we began, we have introduced multiple new families of sheds to the lineup as well as features and innovations to each product.
Shortly after the success of the 8-foot shed, Lifetime developed and released an 11-foot series and a 7-foot series of sheds, then a side-entry style. In 2013, we released the Horizontal Shed, followed by the Vertical Shed in 2017 and the Utility Shed in 2020.
In 2015, we used a unique carving process to create the Rough Cut™ texture, giving resin shed panels the look and feel of natural wood with the same durability and low maintenance of high-density polyethylene.
With evolving trends in architecture and design, Lifetime developed the Modern Shed in 2020. In the last ten years, we have also innovated the steel reinforcement and truss system, allowing for easier assembly and luxurious features like extended ridge skylights, letting natural light into the interior of the shed and making for a brighter storage experience.
Lifetime is always looking for new and inventive ways to improve shed products for our customers, as well as develop new options to suit the outdoor storage needs of more people around the world. Over 20 years of making sheds, we have turned initial disappointments into unexpected successes, curiosities into invention, and opportunities into implementation of new ideas. Since starting our shed line in 2005, we have sold 3 million sheds to customers all around the world. Join us in celebrating two decades of high-quality, innovative sheds made in the USA!
