The History of Lifetime Tables and Chairs

In 1995, Lifetime Products managed a separate operation called Lifetime Leisure; this brand made innovative folding picnic tables that had blow-molded panels for the top and benches, and could fold flat for easier transport and storage.

At the time, consumer options for portable tables were limited to Masonite wooden products, made of heavy particle board with a metal lip around the underside of the table. These tables were heavy, unpleasant to use, and capable of cutting your hands when you grabbed the underside around the metal lip. One day, while setting up some of these tables for an event, Lifetime Products founder Barry Mower had an idea.

Barry imagined that by using the high-density polyethylene table top from the Lifetime Leisure picnic table, along with a steel frame, he could make a portable utility table that was versatile, durable, reliable, and better to use than the heavy, painful particle board.

He was right! The Lifetime Utility Table, as it was called at the time, was weather resistant, lightweight, durable, and convenient to use. It was about 35% lighter than the particle board table, and the support channel around the bottom was smooth and comfortable to hold. The Lifetime Table was a huge success when it launched in 1998, selling out across the country and replacing the particle board tables in stores, homes, and businesses.

The table shipped with a warranty card that detailed product and warranty information and requested feedback on what Lifetime should develop next. Overwhelming customer response indicated a desire for a chair to match the table, that could fold and had the same look and durability. By October 5th of 2000, the first production Lifetime Folding Chair was ready to ship. It soon became a massive success alongside the table, and Lifetime Leisure was reabsorbed into the central Lifetime Products structure. Lifetime Tables and Chairs was officially born.

Lifetime expanded to a new factory in 2002, further increasing our capability for innovating and building new tables and chairs, including the Fold-in-Half design, which is even easier to move and store. Over the years, we have added new features and technology to an ever-expanding line of table and chair products, including patented tack-off patterns, edge protection, locking frames, and improved manufacturing techniques to continue to provide better quality to our customers.

Today, Lifetime tables and chairs are in millions of homes, churches, businesses, event centers, sports and music venues around the globe, providing the necessary utility for people to gather with friends and family, making memories that last and reminding us why we love to get together.

Lifetime Products is proud to be the number one brand worldwide for tables and chairs, and we’re proud to have served our customers for 25 years. We hope you’ll sit with us and enjoy 25 more!
