National Basketball Day

Today is unofficially National Basketball Day.  It was on November 6, 1861 that James Naismith was born.    Thirty years later, Naismith was a young physical education teacher at a YMCA in Massachusetts with bored students who needed an indoor athletic distraction during the winter.  Naismith decided to nail two peach baskets to the balcony at both ends of a gymnasium.  He divided his students into teams and they attempted to toss a ball into the baskets…the game of basketball was born.  According to notes kept by Naismith about the first "Basket Ball" game,  the game was played with nine players on each team using a soccer ball.   Today, even though the rules and equipment have changed slightly, basketball is played by more than 300 million peop

What is Blow Molding?

Blow molding.  You hear us say it over-and-over again when we talk about our products.  But, what does that really mean?   In case you don't know, today I'll give you a quick explanation and show you a few photos to, hopefully, help you understand the process of blow molding a little better. Every plastic product that Lifetime makes starts as white plastic pellets, like in this picture.  These pellets are hauled in on train cars to our factory. We use nearly 400 train cars of pellets per year!  The plastic pellets are then pumped to our outdoor silos and then to the building silos.  (If you live near our factory in Utah, you may have noticed a new Lifetime logo towering in the skies.  The logo is on our newest silo that stores these plastic pellets.)

Backstage at Lifetime's Semi-Annual Meeting

Peering around the curtains, I began scanning the auditorium. It was quickly filling with around 800-900 Lifetime employees (judging by the seat capacity of 1000). Just a few more minutes until starting time... I told myself. Before I knew it, I felt the stage crew manager tapping my shoulder. “Time to start” he said. I looked at my laptop and queued up our opening video... here we go… Welcome backstage to a behind the scenes look at Lifetime’s Profit Sharing meeting 2011. If you read this blog 6 months ago, you know that our Profit Sharing meeting is a semi-annual tradition at Lifetime. This

Lifetime Celebrates Local Dick’s Sporting Goods Grand Opening

Can you make 121 free throws in a row?  We know someone who did!  During the Dick’s Sporting Goods Store grand opening event in Layton, Utah, we had a customer at our booth make 121 free throws in a row to set the record and win a Lifetime Basketball System! We also had a child make 95 free throws in a row.  Pretty impressive numbers. The free throw contest was just one of the many activities Lifetime sponsored at the new Dick’s Sporting Goods in Layton, Utah during its grand opening the weekend of September 16-18.  Since Dick’s Sporting Goods sells our products, they invited Lifetime to take part in the celebration.  This was a great community event that brought out hundreds of people in our local area.  The three-day event start

A few weeks ago, The Bateman IP Group in Utah hosted the annual Utah Genius Awards at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City and thanks to the creative collaboration of our research and development team, Lifetime was honored, yet again as one of the top companies with the most patents issued in 2012—with 22 new patents!
