How to Properly Fill a Portable Basketball Base

Now that you've had some time to assemble that new Lifetime Portable Basketball System you got for Christmas, let's cover a few important things that every basketball hoop owner should know.  (Yes, that means this is important for you to read even if you aren't a brand new basketball hoop owner.) Portable basketball systems are convenient. You can purchase a Lifetime Basketball System and be playing basketball the same day. However, when you assemble a portable basketball system, it is important to always follow the manufacturer's instructions very carefully.  And, that means right down to the final instruction about filling your portable base. I have seen lots of systems with weights, bags of cement, or bricks on top of the

What NOT to Do When Assembling a Lifetime Basketball Hoop

A few months ago I forewarned you of the top three things to know before assembling a Lifetime Basketball Hoop. Today, I'm going to share with you some of the specific hurdles I alluded to in that post that we crossed along the way when assembling our own Lifetime Basketball Hoop (model 90228). To be honest, I'm kind of embarrassed to share my story with you given some of the pretty major "oopsies" we had.  After all, since I work for Lifetime, you'd think I'd know how to assemble the products.  Not necessarily true.  This was my first time assem

Basketball Hoop FAQs During Winter Months

Last week, 49 of 50 states in America had snow on the ground in at least some part of the state. Florida was the only state to escape the big snow storms hitting the rest of the country.  With cold temperatures upon us, there are many questions that come up about winterizing basketball systems and what steps should be taken to ensure your system is ready for next spring. Here are some FAQs that will hopefully shed some light on questions you may have concerning your basketball hoop. Q:  Should I use antifreeze in a

Backboard Materials

There are many different types of backboard materials to choose from. Sometimes all of the options can be a bit overwhelming. Here is a quick run-down of the different backboards available when you purchase a basketball system from Lifetime Products. Keep in mind, all graphics on Lifetime’s backboards are screen-printed with UV-protected inks for superior color and protection against fading, peeling, or scratching.

Only Three Games Left - Enter to Win a Portable Hoop

The NBA Finals are in full swing. The showdown between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs has been going back and forth for four games now. Will the Big Three repeat their game-four performance or will San Antonio’s savvy veterans and young bench continue to cause problems for the Heat? Only three games left before basketball comes to a head. Even though the NBA season is ending, it doesn’t mean the basketball season has to end. One of my favorite pastimes were the summer night spent in the driveway playing basketball (way back then, we had a Lifetime Hoop!) with my brothers and friends. A lot of time was spent pretending to be one of the legendary players from the 80’s and 90’s: Bird, Magic, Jordan, Stockton, and Malone (let’s be honest, I have a little hometown bias on the last two). With a new gen

Angled or Straight Basketball Poles?

On occasion, I have been asked whether I prefer a straight or an angled pole when selecting a portable basketball system. At first glance, an angled pole may appear to have performance or safety advantages, but when looked at from an engineer’s perspective, some deeper insights can be gained. I sat down with one of Lifetime’s head engineers to discuss why Lifetime chooses to use straight basketball poles on our systems. Ed has been an engineer at Lifetime Products since 1993 and has played a large role in developing our basketball systems over the years. Here are some of his insights on angled vs. straight basketball systems. Are basketball systems with an angled pole less likely to tip over than ones with a vertical pole?

National Basketball Day

Today is unofficially National Basketball Day.  It was on November 6, 1861 that James Naismith was born.    Thirty years later, Naismith was a young physical education teacher at a YMCA in Massachusetts with bored students who needed an indoor athletic distraction during the winter.  Naismith decided to nail two peach baskets to the balcony at both ends of a gymnasium.  He divided his students into teams and they attempted to toss a ball into the baskets…the game of basketball was born.  According to notes kept by Naismith about the first "Basket Ball" game,  the game was played with nine players on each team using a soccer ball.   Today, even though the rules and equipment have changed slightly, basketball is played by more than 300 million peop

The Office Basketball Shot: Catch You on the Flippity Flip!

Like 7,742,484 other people, I follow NBC's The Office on Facebook and I'm a big fan of the show. Last night's tear-jerker was a great way to say goodbye to the Michael Scott we have come to love, and begin to close their seventh season. As part of the usual Thursday night ritual, I was curled up on the couch with a bowl of dinner and my favorite throw. I think I speak for all "Office Fans" at Lifetime when I say
