“MADE IN U.S.A.” LEGISLATION A WIN FOR AMERICAN BUSINESS
CLEARFIELD, UTAH, June 5, 2015 – On June 4th, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), Senator Angus King (I-ME), Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), and Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) introduced the Reinforcing American-Made Products Act (S. 1518). The bill ensures that only one standard is used for “Made in U.S.A.” labeling everywhere in the country. This will enable more American manufacturers to celebrate their local manufacturing story while maintaining a strong world-class “Made in U.S.A.” standard.
Richard Hendrickson, President and CEO of Lifetime Products made this statement: “Lifetime has always been committed to American products. We feel strongly that this bill will help maintain and encourage U.S. manufacturing by clarifying and simplifying the ‘Made in U.S.A.’ label. Most importantly, it creates opportunities for our U.S. employees. Yes, people want to buy ‘Made in U.S.A.’ products, but it’s more important to me that our people working in the U.S. can see ‘Made in U.S.A.’ on the products. The employees are working hard to make these products and they care. They care that the consumer knows. I am convinced that a federal standard is not only essential to help U.S. companies thrive, but I also think it’s equally important that U.S. employees can see their stamp on the work they’ve done.”
Lifetime Products, Inc., together with a coalition of companies and organizations from across the country, has lead the effort to bring this important issue to light. Senators and Congressmen from all across the nation have responded by supporting this important legislation. Lifetime will continue to work hard to help this bill make it all the way to the President’s desk.
"This is a big step forward for U.S. manufacturing, as consumers are more aware and are looking for U.S.-made goods. This bill will help more U.S. manufacturers celebrate the ‘Made in U.S.A.’ label for their goods without fear of multiple standards and requirements,” said Lifetime’s Vice President of Marketing, Clinton Morris. “We at Lifetime are excited to continue to work with Sen. Mike Lee and his Senate and committee colleagues as the bill progresses through Congress."
“U.S. Manufacturers are constantly fighting to stay relevant and competitive in the global marketplace,” said Hadley Moss, Assistant Counsel for Lifetime. “The reality of doing business in this country is that you are constantly fighting to stay ahead of the regulatory system and those that would exploit it. The ‘Made in U.S.A.’ labeling regime has been abused by plaintiff’s attorneys with the sparkle of gold in their eyes. This important bill will protect legitimate American manufacturers who are providing jobs and supporting our economy from this abuse and will provide a unitary standard for consumers. It's a win-win for manufactures and consumers alike.”
When signed, the Reinforcing American-Made Products Act would strengthen the already existing world-class federal labeling requirements and ensure that states do not create a patchwork of different standards governing interstate and exported goods. One state has complicated our national standard, setting a rigid 100% threshold and exposing manufacturers to unnecessary litigation. The Reinforcing American-Made Products Act would fix this interruption in interstate commerce by creating one national standard.
Lifetime owes a sincere thanks to Senators Lee, Fischer, King and Collins and their staff as well as all the companies and organizations that have been involved in achieving this great milestone towards supporting Utah and other American businesses.
